The four bosses of the Hall of Thanes: Faldrim Anvilmar, Magmatus, Plunder and Durgen Dirgehammer

Quick summary

  • A new 5-player dungeon for levels 13–18, beneath the High Seat of Ironforge: the Alliance’s first dungeon, much like Ragefire Chasm is for the Horde.
  • The entrance is in Old Ironforge, through the open door on your left as you enter the High Seat. The Horde can come too, but it’s a long and dangerous trip.
  • Four bosses: Faldrim Anvilmar, Magmatus, Plunder and Durgen Dirgehammer, the last one. Each drops three blue items.
  • Five quests. Important Heirlooms and An Ancient Grudge work for both factions; the Treaty of Understanding is a hidden quest in the vaults of the last room.
  • Standouts: the Deepblaze wand and Ironforge Greathammer from Old Ironforge Incursion, the Fang of Magmatus and Golemheart Stave for casters, and Durgen’s Crescent Axe.

The Hall of Thanes is the resting place of Ironforge’s great dwarven heroes, part of Old Ironforge, which you could never enter in the original game. The Dark Iron dwarves have tunnelled in to loot the tombs, and the restless dead have woken up. It’s one of nine dungeons new to WoW Forever and, for most Alliance players, the first dungeon they’ll run. Hover any boss ability, item or quest to see its WoW Forever tooltip.

How to get there

  • Alliance: walk into the High Seat of Ironforge, where King Magni sits, and take the open door on your left into Old Ironforge. Follow the path all the way down; the dungeon portal is at the bottom.
  • Horde: possible, but a long trip through enemy territory: from Hillsbrad through Arathi Highlands, the Wetlands and Loch Modan into Dun Morogh, then past Ironforge’s guards. Take your gear off before you get close, so dying to the guards doesn’t cost you repairs.
  • If you wipe: the Spirit Healer is just outside Ironforge, so the run back is short.

Quests

In WoW Forever, most of a dungeon’s experience comes from its quests rather than its monsters, so pick them up before you go in. Two of them start in Old Ironforge itself, on the way down to the portal.

The Treaty of UnderstandingAllianceThe Treaty of Understanding, in a vault in the Reliquary of KingsTake it to Magni BronzebeardReputation with Ironforge and Gnomeregan
  • Old Ironforge Incursion needs a short lead-in: a Dark Iron Map from the Dark Iron dwarves in Dun Morogh starts Underground Map, which takes you to Earthseer Farsen. Do it before your first run.
  • Dwarven Heirlooms start appearing after the first boss, and the vaults in the last room hold enough for the whole group, so don’t fight over them.
  • The Treaty of Understanding is the dungeon’s hidden quest. Check the vaults in the Reliquary of Kings after the last boss. The tablet bears the sigils of Madoran Bronzebeard and Khardros Wildhammer, with a space left for a third.

Dangerous trash

The first part of the dungeon is easy. The trash gets serious once you reach the Dark Iron side.

  • Dark Iron Looters attack very fast with daggers. Pull too many and your tank melts, so kill them first.
  • Dark Iron Engineers throw bombs at a spot on the ground. Watch where they aim and step away: the damage is completely avoidable.
  • Dark Iron Summoners cast Fireballs and call a Fiery Assistant with Summon Fiery Assistant. Break line of sight behind a pillar so they have to come to you.
  • Lesser Stone Golems hit hard and move fast. Pull them one at a time where you can, and focus one down before the next. Polymorph and stuns like Hammer of Justice help a lot with the mixed packs near the end.
  • Enraged Apparitions and Tormented Souls are the restless dead you need for The Restless Dead.

Bosses

Faldrim Anvilmar

Faldrim Anvilmar, a boss in the Hall of Thanes

The spirit of an ancient thane, patrolling the middle of Anvilmar’s Rest. A simple tank-and-spank fight; the only danger is pulling him into a trash pack. Clear your side of the room, wait for him to patrol to you, then pull.

  • Mind Blast — Shadow damage on his target.
  • Anvilmar’s Curse — turns the tank’s skin to stone for 10 minutes: 20% slower attacks and casts, but immunity to poison and bleeds.

Loot: Spiritwraith Drape, Ephemeral Choker, Aetherwisp Bracers.

Magmatus

Magmatus, a boss in the Hall of Thanes

A fire elemental guarded by a Dark Iron Summoner, and the fight your healer will feel most. The tank pulls Magmatus away from the group while everyone kills the Summoner first; then switch to the boss. He also pulses fire around himself, so keep ranged players spread out.

  • Combust — a 3-second cast that sets a random player on fire for 12 seconds. Heal through it.

Loot: Kindlegem Girdle, Flamefist Grips, Fang of Magmatus.

Plunder

Plunder, a boss in the Hall of Thanes

A stone golem that patrols its hallway. Its only trick is a knockback, so pull it somewhere safe and stand with your back to a wall or corner so you can’t be thrown into another pack.

  • Knock Away — damage and a knockback on the tank.

Loot: Golemheart Stave, Golemguard Chest, Treads of the Protector Golem.

Durgen Dirgehammer

Durgen Dirgehammer, a boss in the Hall of Thanes

The Dark Iron leader and the last boss, with two Lesser Stone Golems at his side and Dark Iron Looters around the edge of the room. Kill every Looter before you start. Then kill the Golems one at a time, using stuns and crowd control to keep the damage on your tank under control. He drops his head for Old Ironforge Incursion.

  • Fear — sends players running in terror.
  • Rend — a bleed on the tank.

Loot: Durgen’s Crescent Axe, Direhammer Leggings, Robes of the Disgraced Thane, and Durgen Dirgehammer’s Head for the quest.

Best loot by role

Deepblaze deserves a mention of its own: at over 18 damage per second it’s a big upgrade for any Priest, Mage or Warlock who levels with a wand, and it comes from the quest, so it’s guaranteed.

Tips for a smooth run

  • Pick up Old Ironforge Incursion first. Its rewards are the best in the dungeon, and its lead-in starts out in Dun Morogh.
  • Bring crowd control. The mixed packs of Golems, Looters and Summoners near the end are much easier with a Polymorph or a stun.
  • Kill the Looters first in every pack, and clear them all before Durgen.
  • Don’t leave without checking the vaults: the Reliquary of Kings has the Treaty of Understanding and the last Dwarven Heirlooms.
