The six bosses of Ruins of Lordaeron: Witherfang, The Baron, Viktor the Vile, The Abandoned, Bjork and Rath’mael

Quick summary

  • A new 5-player dungeon for levels 15–20 in the ruined capital above the Undercity. Recommended level: 16–22. Easy for the Horde to reach, a long trip for the Alliance.
  • Six bosses you can kill in any order: Witherfang, The Baron, Viktor the Vile, The Abandoned, Bjork and Rath’mael. Viktor and The Abandoned only appear after waves of adds, and Viktor is optional and easy to miss.
  • Every boss drops three blue items, and the Rotmender’s Raiment healing set drops from both bosses and trash.
  • Six quests for the Horde, four for the Alliance, including the Crest of Lordaeron that both sides can find inside. Most experience in Forever dungeons comes from quests, so pick them all up first.
  • Standouts: the Corpse Chopper two-hander, the Mirror of Rath’mael shield, the Scepter of the Abandoned and Coldspire Staff for casters, and The Stitcher for Horde healers.

Ruins of Lordaeron is one of nine dungeons added in WoW Forever. The Forsaken are trying to take back the ruins of their old capital from the Scourge, and you’re there to help. For most players it will be their first or second dungeon. Hover any boss ability, item or quest in this guide to see its WoW Forever tooltip.

How to get there

  • Horde: easy. Go to the Undercity and up into the open Ruins of Lordaeron above it; the dungeon portal is inside. From Brill, walk south. Orcs and Trolls can take the zeppelin from Orgrimmar to Tirisfal Glades.
  • Alliance: a long trip into Horde territory. Head north through Silverpine Forest toward Tirisfal Glades, ideally as a group. Set your hearthstone somewhere useful before you leave, because the way back is just as long.
  • If you wipe: a Spirit Healer stands right outside the entrance, so the run back is short.

Quests: pick them up first

In WoW Forever, most of a dungeon’s experience moved from the monsters into its quests, so collect every quest before you go in. Note that the quests are harder than their listed level: they show as level 15–16 but the dungeon is closer to 20.

The Crest of Lordaeron is the dungeon’s secret quest: it spawns in one of several spots, so look around every room and rooftop as you clear. It’s worth a full quest’s experience.

Route and dangerous trash

The dungeon is open and non-linear, which makes it easy to get lost and easy to pull too much. A route that works: from the entrance, clear King’s Alley for Witherfang, take the western passage to The Baron, cross Lordamere Overlook (where Viktor the Vile’s event is), go on to Market Street for The Abandoned, through the big window to Bjork, and finish at the graveyard with Rath’mael.

  • Spiders near the entrance are weak, but some packs patrol, so pull carefully.
  • Skeletal Soldiers and Shrieking Banshees around The Baron: the soldiers hit hard in groups and the banshees silence. Stuns such as Hammer of Justice help.
  • Flesh Golems hit very hard and use Knock Away, which reduces threat and can throw your tank into another pack. They also drop the Rotmender’s Garb.
  • Ghouls and Ragged Ghouls come in packs of three or four, close to each other. This is where most wipes happen: pull one pack at a time.
  • Stone Watchers look like gargoyle statues until you get close, and players report that they turn to stone mid-fight, shrugging off physical damage. They drop the Rotmender’s Gloves.

Paladins have an easy time here: Exorcism, learned at level 20, hits undead hard, and almost everything in the dungeon is undead.

Bosses

Witherfang

Witherfang, a boss in Ruins of Lordaeron

A giant spider that patrols King’s Alley with two smaller spiders. Clear the trash along its path first, then pull it. Kill the small spiders quickly, then tank and spank. Cure the poison off your tank if you can.

  • Leech Poison — drains health from the tank over 40 seconds and heals Witherfang. A cure poison removes it.

Loot: Atrophic Girdle, Segmented Spider Leg, Witherbite Bracers, and the Highly Toxic Strain for the Horde quest.

The Baron

The Baron, a boss in Ruins of Lordaeron

A huge abomination past the Ghostly Citizens on the western side, and the hardest-hitting boss in the dungeon. Keep your tank near full health at all times and stun him as often as you can. Melee stand behind him.

  • Knockout — heavy damage that knocks the target back, stuns it and drops threat. It can kill a tank who isn’t topped up.

Loot: Meathook Slicer, Abomination Bones, Leftover Abomination Skin, plus the Abominable Head (Horde) and Head of the Baron (Alliance) for quests.

Viktor the Vile (hidden boss)

Viktor the Vile (hidden boss), a boss in Ruins of Lordaeron

Easy to miss. In the burned-out house to the southwest of Lordamere Overlook, near the graveyard, light the fire in the chimney. That starts five waves of adds, and Viktor arrives after them. Start it with full mana: the waves drain your healer. Let the tank build threat before the damage dealers open up. Some groups on the beta report that Viktor sometimes fails to appear.

  • Leech Poison — the same poison as Witherfang, alongside heavy melee hits.

Loot: Vileblood Scimitar, Bloodied Chestwraps, Vilewalkers.

The Abandoned

The Abandoned, a boss in Ruins of Lordaeron

Waits in the statue on Market Street, just past Lordamere Overlook. Walking in triggers three waves of adds before he comes out. If an add gets stuck in a corridor and the event stalls, go and find it.

  • Frost Nova — freezes everyone nearby in place. Melee attackers also get chilled.
  • Life Drain — a 2-second cast on the tank that heals him. Stun or interrupt it.

Loot: Scepter of the Abandoned, Grip of Fear, Rotmender’s Leggings.

Bjork

Bjork, a boss in Ruins of Lordaeron

Through the big window past the courtyard. The quickest fight in the dungeon: a straight tank and spank. Mind the ghoul packs around him and pull him alone.

  • Anti-Magic Shield — makes him immune to magic for 3 seconds. Casters can wait it out or keep casting non-damage spells.

Loot: Corpse Chopper, Bonerust Leggings, Tuskwrap Belt.

Rath’mael

Rath’mael, a boss in Ruins of Lordaeron

The usual last boss, in the graveyard. The Blood-Stained Letter for the Alliance quest is near him, and so is Edward for the Horde quest A Frightened Request.

  • Flamestrike — lands where the tank was standing when the cast began, so the tank should step out as soon as he starts casting. Stun or interrupt him to stop it.

Loot: Mirror of Rath’mael, Coldspire Staff, Rotmender’s Treads.

Best loot by role

Two items are more than their stats. The Corpse Chopper has an on-use effect that chops a humanoid or undead corpse in two to restore 150 health, 150 mana and 15 Rage, which is great while leveling. The Tarnished Locket is a lore reward rather than an upgrade.

Rotmender’s Raiment

A five-piece cloth set for healers, spread across the dungeon:

PieceWhere it drops
Rotmender’s GarbFlesh Golems
Rotmender’s SashTrash in the dungeon
Rotmender’s GlovesStone Watchers
Rotmender’s LeggingsThe Abandoned
Rotmender’s TreadsRath’mael

Set bonuses: +5 Shadow Resistance at 2 pieces, +10 Intellect at 3, a mana restore when you drop below 15% mana at 4 (twice as strong in haunted and wasteland zones), and a heal-over-time proc on your healing spells at 5. A nice leveling set for a Priest, Druid or Shaman healer, though few groups will stay long enough to collect all five.

Tips for a smooth run

  • Bring stuns and interrupts. The Baron, The Abandoned and Rath’mael all have casts or attacks you can stop with a stun.
  • Bring a cure. Witherfang and Viktor both use Leech Poison.
  • Don’t skip Viktor without deciding to. His event costs time and mana, but his three drops are among the best in the dungeon.
  • Loot needs level 15–19, so the dungeon stays worth running until around 22.
